The ioLight Microscope was developed by founders Andrew Monk and Richard Williams, who have extensive experience in technology start-ups and optical technology.
As smartphone and tablet technology advanced, the founders recognized their potential as powerful tools for professional applications. Although smartphones offered increasingly capable cameras and there were already several smartphone-compatible microscopes available, many existing products did not provide the optical quality required for professional microscopy.
With a PhD in optics and more than 20 years of experience in optical engineering, Richard Williams identified the optical limitations behind these products. This led to the development of the ioLight Microscope, designed to combine high-quality optical performance with the convenience and portability of smartphones and tablets.
The company filed a UK patent application in 2014, followed by a worldwide PCT patent application in 2015.
The ioLight Microscope brings professional-quality optical technology into a compact and portable system. By connecting the microscope to a smartphone or tablet, users can capture, view and share microscope images using a familiar mobile device.
